UKonline Centre e-gov Award

UK online centres been celebrating success after scooping a special ‘highly commended’ award for Building a fairer society with e-Government.

The award was collected by Managing Director Helen Milner. She attended the E-Government National Awards in London on Tuesday 22 January 2008 along with a delegation of UK online centres. The award recognises the outstanding contributions of the UK online centres network and myguide in building a fairer society with e-Government by helping disadvantaged people to use computers and the internet and improve their lives.

Helen Milner said: “I’m delighted that myguide and UK online centres have been recognised for our contribution in motivating and supporting digitally excluded people to get online, get connected to public services, and get the skills and confidence to make computers and the internet work for them.

“There are often complex factors at work in exclusion - age, culture, disability, income, education or even attitude. Overcoming those barriers is key to creating a fairer and more equal society, and that’s the goal UK online centres and myguide are working towards.”

Merseyside-based company Onteca will now join the most innovative companies from the North of England in pitching their idea direct to BBC commissioners, representing Merseyside’s Digital Media sector at this highly prestigious event.

To quote the BBC Press Release: “Innovation Labs are a series of events bringing together BBC Commissioners and regional digital media companies to develop and commission innovative new products and services for the BBC.”

What it doesn’t stress here is that getting a place at the labs is highly competitive. In the entire North of England only ten new media companies can be selected to attend. As the process of applying is so simple, and potential rewards so great, a good proportion of the digital media sector gave it a go. Onteca is the only Merseyside based company to gain a place, and is one of only two from the England’s North West region. Onteca is also one of the few in the UK to be invited two years in a row.

Last year, Onteca went to the Innovation Lab held in Cumbria, and the eight companies invited to Cumbria were all from the North West region. This year they were competing with the best companies from across the entire North of England to win one of the coveted invites to a hotel in North Yorkshire.

Managing Director Jon Wetherall said “We are really excited about this opportunity, the repeat invitation to Innovation Labs recognises our status as one of the most innovative Web 2.0 developers in the UK”
