The year is 2008. The place is Liverpool, European Capital of Culture. You can race a Jaguar X-TYPE in the prestigious Streets of Culture time-trials!

Students at St Margaret’s High School in Liverpool have designed this computer game as part of an initiative to encourage social enterprise and responsibility. Proceeds from the sales are raising money for BBC Children in Need.

The project has engaged the students in creativity in design, entrepreneurial and business learning, and in making a difference through social enterprise by working on an exciting, real product. The students formed SMG, St Margaret’s Games, based on a company organisation that mirrors the computer games industry. The students created a game design, designed logos and artwork, and designed the racing tracks. They also photographed Liverpool landmarks to be recreated within the game.

Their design and specifications were built over the summer by Lateral Visions Software Company, a company based in Liverpool specialising in applying computer games technology to education and business applications.

Jaguar Cars Limited supported the project and supplied 3D models of the X-TYPE for use within the game and hosted the official launch.

At the launch, Dr David Dennison, Headmaster of St Margaret’s, spoke about the importance of projects such as this in encouraging and developing the leaders and entrepreneurs of tomorrow, and the specific need to create social entrepreneurs to develop the caring, moral communities of the future.

Firstly I would like to congratulate Lateral Visions and St Margaret’s on a great game for such a worthy cause.

I was recently at a conference looking at how ‘serious games’ are being used in education and another Lateral Visions project was given as a case study.

Racing Academy is a racing game built on an advanced physics simulation engine that is being used to teach physics and mechanical engineering. The JISC funded project, in partnership with Futurelab, has had excellent feedback and is now being rolled out to a number of schools, colleges and universities.

Anybody interested in the future of teaching and ICT should view the Futurelab case study at:

A downloadable prototype is also available from Lateral Visions website:
